Dimapur | June 3

The Industrial Estate Colony Council, aided by the youth, took it upon itself to repair a crucial section of NH 36 in Dimapur. According to the colony’s youth President, Bendang Pongener the colony council put together funds to gather gravel, broken bricks and stone dust to fill up potholes dotting the stretch of the highway starting from the Assam Rifles camp (old firing range) till the District Jail intersection. It was the second time in recent years, the residents of the colony took to repairing the said stretch of NH 36, a highway which connects Nagaland with Diphu and Nagaon via Manja.

Pongener said that the road condition was deplorable and unbecoming of a National Highway. “The road has been in a deplorable condition for a very long time. It is unsafe for two-wheelers and pedestrians in particular, but the authorities have shown no concern over the years. Having lost all hopes from any quarter, the colony Council took it upon itself to repair with whatever it could for the welfare of all,” he said.

The Dimapur leg of NH 36, starting from the Dillai inter-state check-post till the Old Road Overbridge via GS Road has remained in a state of disrepair for over a decade owing to governmental neglect. The condition of the particular stretch passing through the District Jail junction, in particular has deteriorated, resulting in deep and wide potholes that not only makes for a bumpy ride but also endangering the safety of commuters.
