DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 21 (MExN): The Garo tribe celebrated "Wangala,” a post-harvest thanksgiving festival to Misi-Saljong (Sun God) for rich harvest of the tribe, under the supervision of Nagaland Garo Tribal Council (NGTC) in different Garo villages and units of Dimapur district on November 21.

The festival could not be celebrated in one common venue due to non-sanctioning of Mini-Hornbill fund by the department concern and the State Government, but we put our best effort in celebrating in a befitting manner in all the Garo villages and units, NGTC said in a press release.

The villages and units include Eralibill, Samaguri, Dubagaon, Ekranipathar, Darogapathar, Dimapur town unit and Chümoukedima Unit. “We also hope that the government will listen to our plight and give our due share after the festival,” the release said.

During the event, different items like, indigenous games, folk songs, Chu (rice beer) making and traditional Wangala dances were performed and displayed.

Young and old gathered in large numbers wearing traditional dresses to witness and take part in the festival, it added.

Meanwhile, the release said that the NGTC, the apex body of Garo tribe, one of the recognised indigenous tribe of Nagaland, is working very hard to preserve our rich culture and traditions.

“It would be very much appreciated if the state government takes necessary steps in safeguarding and protecting our rights and also help us by providing basic amenities,” it added.
