GNP+ receives Special Consultative Status at the UN

DIMAPUR, AUGUST 24 (MExN): In a press communiqué sent to The Morung Express, the Global Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS (GNP+) stated that it has been granted Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the UN. It said that the granting of the Special Consultative Status to GNP+ will “be a unique opportunity for People Living with HIV/AIDS to make their voices heard and felt at the UN.”

GNP+ said that it can now assume an instrumental role during the UN General Assembly’s Special Session on HIV and AIDS (UNGASS) to be held next month. During the session it is expected that the Assembly will deliberate on the progress of the 2001 UN Declaration of Commitment that covers areas on Human Rights, Stigma and Discrimination, Access to Treatment and the GIPA principle. The communiqué further said that the special status will empower and enlarge possibilities for PLWHA to make a unified stand at the UN and at the UNGASS specifically.
