Amid renewed calls by the Naga Council Dimapur to repeal the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (NLTP) Act, 1989, the Nagaland Government today maintained that no decision has yet been taken on the matter.

Addressing media personnel this evening at Hotel Japfü, Nagaland Government Spokesperson and Minister for Power & Parliamentary Affairs, KG Kenye, admitted that while the NLTP Act was introduced with “good intent” for the overall benefit and interest of the people, its implementation “did not go down well with our people.”

Acknowledging that the issue continues to evoke diverse opinions, Kenye stated, “The government, after observing the reactions of the people, thought maybe we leave it in the court of the people. It is a people-centric issue, so let the vast majority decide on the future course.”

He further noted that the State Government has been “observing healthy debates and opinions being exchanged from different angles, covering different walks of life amongst all sorts of people.”

Kenye informed that the State Government has yet to take cognisance of the latest move by the NCD, which, following meetings on October 14 and 29, has renewed the call for lifting the NLTP Act in Dimapur district.

In this connection, the Minister said that a time will come when the Cabinet will take up the discussion. Meanwhile, he urged the media to play a proactive role in reflecting public opinion from different walks of life.
