Kohima, June 7 (MExN): Governor of Nagaland, PB Acharya handed over Library books and book racks to Government Middle School, Officers Hill, Kohima on June 7 as part of the ‘Library Programme’ sponsored by Team Naga Chetana, Rotary Club of Karkala and Reading Star, an NGO that works to ensure that every school is equipped with a library.
In a press release from PRO to Governor, the programme was motivated by India National Fellowship Centre (INFC), a NGO from Mumbai and initiated by the Governor.
Governor Acharya stated that Government Schools have a prominent role to strengthen Nagaland and called on the teachers to be dedicated and give their heart and soul in educating the young minds. He opined that no child should be left out in accruing knowledge through education, encouraging parents to send their children to school regularly.
The Governor said that it was up to the students to make use of the education they receive and build the future and build a better society and Nagaland. He also encouraged the students to make proper use of the library and to read as much as they could. “Reading is important as it develops the mind and helps us discover new things,” he added.
He also called on the Officers Hill colony residents to contribute in whatever way they could for the upliftment of the Middle School. Stating that the strength of the chain lies in the weakest link, Governor Acharya opined that the residents must strengthen the Middle School so as to strengthen the society. He further assured to support and contribute towards the welfare of the school provided the colony residents take up developmental activities for the school.
Wife of Governor, Kavita Acharya, who had adopted the school, stated that library and sports were part of education and called on the students to make use of the nearly 200 academic and general knowledge books available at the newly installed library.
Four schools under Kohima district have been selected under the Library Programme and will be given a selection of Indian and imported books that will help children to improve their reading skills; learn to enjoy the reading process; learn more about India and Nagaland through folktales, the Panchatantra and Hitopadesha.
A number of nonfiction books of different reading levels to learn science, history have also been included. The schools will also be given two dictionaries each to be used by the students and teachers.
The programme was attended by students, teachers, colony representatives and teachers from SCD Burfiwala High School, Mumbai who are in Nagaland for a teacher exchange programme, a release from PRO to Governor informed.
Governor Acharya had also distributed Braille books donated by Team Naga Chetana to the Dimapur Visually Impaired School during an interactive programme at Durbar Hall, Raj Bhavan during the month of April.
