Kohima: The Attorney General of India has requested the Supreme Court to give more time over the formation of Local Commission, so as to enable him to hold consultations with Nagaland and Assam. This was disclosed by Minister for Border Affairs Khekiho, while replying to the supplementary starred question on the floor of the house earlier.
On February 10, the SC had asked the Attorney General of India to name the chairperson and members of the local commission for settlement of border dispute between the Assam and Nagaland. However, on the request of the AG for more time and the outright rejection by the Nagaland Government to the SC order, the move to constitute the Commission has been kept on hold.
Khekiho said that the Nagaland Government has rejected the SC order because the local commission would involve the settlement of dispute as per the 1925 decision, which is not agreeable to the Nagaland Government as this would completely negate the claims of the Nagas.
However, the Boundary Commission, if formed, would involve legal, constitutional, traditional and ground reality based on political commitment. Khekiho also reiterated that if the formation of Boundary Commission fails, then the state government would keep the option of suing the Government of India for not fulfilling the political commitment like the 9 points agreement and the 16 point agreement.
“Our attorney is preparing the draft for the suit, as and when ready we will let the people know”, said Khekiho, adding that it is difficult to foretell on how the settlement to the long drawn dispute would come about.
