Govt proposal to construct 4-lane stadium road through DGC ground

DNSU opposes move, says complete stadium first

DIMAPUR, MAY 25 (MExN): The Dimapur Naga Students' Union (DNSU) has expressed shock over the Nagaland State Government’s proposal to construct a ‘four-lane stadium road’ passing through the Dimapur Government College football ground to link the State Stadium from National Highway 36.

“This proposal is found to be thoughtless and technically not feasible as it will create a traffic chaos in the National Highway. This shows inefficiency and lack of imagination in our engineering mindset. The most disappointing and shameful thing with this proposal is that there is no state stadium at all except some rotten gallery structures in the proposed state stadium site where the proposed road is supposed to be linked,” a press release from the DNSU stated. It questioned what made the Youth Resources and Sports Department of Nagaland to propose constructing a four-lane stadium road “without a stadium.”

It reminded the State Government that the New Education Policy envisages a combination of all the streams viz Science, Arts and Commerce with skill development programs in one college campus that demands for a spacious geographical area to accommodate all the necessary physical infrastructures.

The DNSU however regretted that even the existing area in the Dimapur Government College is found to be insufficient to meet these desired needs envisaged under NEP as “30% of the original college land has been encroached with tacit understanding.”

The union suggested that the government first complete the stadium and think of having multiple entry and exit points in the east, west, north and southern sides of the stadium without disturbing the “already suffered college land from illegal encroachment.”

It also advised that the State Government handover the proposed state stadium site to the Dimapur Government College in the interest of the students and youth, “if at all the State Government finds it difficult to execute the works and complete it within this first quarter of the 21st century.”
