The department of women development was created by DAN government in 2003 to promote women empowerment through various programmes. “One of the new initiatives we have taken recently is the Transformative Livelihood Intervention that is directed towards expanding the scope for income generation among women”, said Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio in his budget speech at the assembly session last week.
Other new activities include introduction of computerized textile printing machines, and engaging the services of qualified fashion and graphic designers. These measures will help promote textiles for the national and international markets. Rio also said that women entrepreneurs are also being encouraged with interest free loans and training and proposed to allocate Rs. 11.59 crore to this sector.
