DIMAPUR, MAY 21 (MExN): State government is spending close to Rs 200 Crore monthly for salary of its employees both regular and work-charged. For regular employees alone totalling to 87078, the government is spending around Rs 195 crores monthly.

This was disclosed by additional secretary (finance), Kikheto Y. Sema IAS while speaking at 40th general parting social of Khelhoshe Ploytechnic Atoizu (KPA) on Saturday. Quoting finance department figures of March 31, 2011, Kikheto said state has a total of 7016 gazetted officers – 3928 Class I and 3088 Class II gazetted officers; 65292 Grade III employees and 14,770 Grade IV employees. Further, there are more than 24, 000 employees on fixed pay and contingency including village and home guards. The total number of employees both regular and work charged totals to more than 1,25,000 employees, he added.

With the total regular employees coming to 87078 figure, the ratio, if calculated with the state population, stands at 1:22. If the ratio is calculated with the overall number of employees and the population, it stands at 1:16.

Kikheto said Nagaland was among the states in the country that has the highest number of government employees. “The government employee that we have now is much higher than what it should be,” he added.

Pointing to this situation, Kikheto said it was not possible for every qualified student to get a government job and urged the youngsters to venture into the private sector. “Your vision should not be limited to government sector alone,” he said.

Kikheto said the Khelhoshe Polytechnic Atoizu did not belong only to the Sumi community but to the entire Nagas and urged all students and faculties alike to treat as a common property. “KPA belongs to the Nagas, the locals should not feel that this institute belongs to Atoizu or Sumis alone,” he said.

Kikheto said when it comes to common interest, people should do away with individualism of the ‘I’ feeling but move on to the ‘we’ feeling. He pointed out that many KPA alumni have retired honourably from government jobs while some are still highly placed in other sectors.

Being in the technical line, he encouraged the KPA students on the need to update their mind, technology etc with the advancement.  He also impressed upon the students on the quality of education and quality of life both of which should go hand in hand. Kikheto urged the students to let the people see value in them.

The programme was attended by the KPA students, faculty and well wishers.
