Dimapur, June 2 (MExN): The Government of Nagaland is reminded to wake from its slumber and start tackling the issue concerning influx of illegal immigrants into the State. A students’ organization today said ‘genuine citizens’ are starting to undergo mental and financial harassment thanks to high “taxing charges” exacted from them by some NGOs who are working to identify illegal immigrants.
The government’s negligence will encourage more NGOs to exploit the situation and in the long run create negative ramifications, the Western Sumi Students’ Union (WSSU) stated today. The WSSU issued a note today strongly demanding that the Nagaland government get serious. The government must be clear in checking illegal immigrants in the State; the matter must be tackled urgently by the government to thwart immigrants, the organization stated.
In the word of the WSSU: “It is often observed that the students’ body and some NGOs (are) doing commendable job in this issue within limited parameter of 1873 EBFA (Inner Line Regulation Act).
However, with the increasing criminal actions of illegal immigrants, some NGOs in its attempt to identify immigrants, the genuine citizen had to undergo tremendous mental and financial harassment by taxing high charges.”
The WSSU reminds the government that the issue of illegal immigrants is a “natural issue” that needs political commitment to solve simultaneous with preservation of culture. “However, the negligence of the state government may encourage every civil society or NGO to undertake similar practice which would create negative social ramification,” the organization added.
