Govts trying to combat global warming

Nagaland’s Forests & Environment Secretary Elusing Meru (IFS) today stated that governments all over the world are trying to rectify and combat global warming. Speaking at the World Environment Day here this evening at Hotel Japfu under the aegis of the Forestry Graduates’ Association of Nagaland in association with the Department of Water and Soil Conservation under the theme “Green Economy: does it include you?”, Meru said the government has stressed on paradigm in all developments to combat climate change.

Meru highlighted the activities of the department and said that government of India has stressed on low carbon or inclusive growth where environment play a major role in its 12th year plan. 

The secretary also made special mention of the “positive response” from the village community of three districts in Nagaland; one each in Phek, Kohima and Mokokchung districts where the forest department with active support from the community, had established community forests on a pilot project. He also referred to the efforts of villages in Eastern Nagaland where over 100 villages had set up Community Conservation Area Networks in association with NEPED for preservation and protection of forests and wildlife. 

The Secretary termed these initiatives as encouraging that could become a role model for other states in the country to adopt. He further lauded the efforts of Nagaland government and the local communities for initiating community forests and community conservation areas in different parts of the state.
