GPRN/NSCN responds to allegations against Gen.(Retd) Khole Konyak

The renewed pledge for peace and reconciliation among the Naga groups in recent times has gained momentum through the remarkable effort of FNR. The peace process among the Naga groups has resulted in a face to face and honest exchange of views among the Naga leaders. In the midst of the historic highest level meets, the remnant former comrades owing allegiance to self-isolated S.S Khaplang, former NSCN chairman, seems to be not too happy at the prospect of Nagas reconciling, forgiving and accepting one another.
In an apparent attempt to be in the news, many inflammatory and dubious stories are being invented and sent to media by few of Khaplang’s followers. GPRN/NSCN points out that the two press statements which appeared in the local dailies in the name of Konyak Region of Khaplang group on 31st August 2011 needs to be clarified lest the author(s) of such derogatory and accusatory statements undermine the power and authority vested in the hands of Chairman, NSCN and President, GPRN, Gen. (Retd) Khole Konyak.
Gen. (Retd) Khole Konyak, in his meritorious service to the Naga nation so far, has always stood by his words. God gifted him with a sharp memory and he could still recall the triumphant days of Naga Army as well as the most horrific episodes he faced as a soldier. His commitment and vision for the Nagas has always preceded his personal preferences. His understanding of the Indo-Naga Burma political issue is second to none yet the personal ambitions of fellow humans cannot be measured and stopped and that is why he alone could not stop the bloodshed among the Naga brothers in earlier times.
GPRN/NSCN would only say that there are many Naga National workers who are still alive and would testify whether Gen. (Retd) Khole Konyak ordered the massacre of Tangkhul brothers in the past. To accuse him for the split of NSCN in 1988 and bloodshed thereafter is an unforgivable distortion of fact. The commander-in-Chief has no authority to declare war or peace. The power to declare war or peace rests with the president. In 1988 when the crisis erupted, Chairman Isak Chishi Swu was out of station and therefore the then Vice Chairman S.S Khaplang and Gen. Secy. Th. Muivah would best answer if it was Gen. Khole Konyak who ordered the massacre of Tangkhul brothers. The August 31st press statement of K group indicts not only GPRN/NSCN Chairman Gen. Khole Konyak but directly point finger at Konyak community in general. It attempted to whip up animosity and hatred on tribal line particularly between Konyaks and Tangkhuls. The man, whom Chairman Isak Swu and Gen. Secy. Th. Muivah of NSCN (IM) even recently admitted to have saved their lives from certain death at the hands of Shillong Accordists, cannot be responsible for such events of the past. The question of Gen. (Retd) Khole Konyak ordering the massacre of Thankhuls does not arise.
Accusing Gen. (Retd) Khole Konyak as dictatorial and autocratic is something which the Naga Army will not agree. Dictatorship is not a system the NSCN chairman and retired general subscribes to. Naga Nation belongs to the Naga people and one man cannot be the master over the Nagas. The August 31 statement of the so-called Konyak region of K group citing numerous tragic incidents of the past and heaping entire blame on the NSCN Chairman, fully knowing the real genesis of the bloodshed among the Naga family, is sacrilegious. In different times in the past, Gen. Khole had pleaded with Z Ramyo, Keviyalie, Isak, Muivah, Khaplang and other leaders not to resort to violent activities as it does not serve the purpose among Naga brothers.
Youngsters like Wangtin Naga, Kughalu Mulatonu, P Tikhak and others need not go to the media with distorted history of the past. They were not even born when Gen. Khole Konyak joined the Naga Army 57 years ago. They were schoolboys when the crisis occurred in 1988. Today, those who survived the painful episode of Naga history have met each other face to face and agreed to forgive each other in the spirit of love and brotherhood. GPRN/NSCN points out that 1988 crisis can never be called a Konyak-Tangkhul conflict because it never was.
The decision of the National Assembly to impeach and expel S.S Khaplang on 7th June 2011 was done in accordance to the NSCN Yehzabo and the then Naga Army Commander-in-Chief Gen. Khole humbly accepted the responsibility to be the Chairman of NSCN as entrusted by the National Tatar Hoho.
In view of the seriousness of the nature of accusations, numerous distortion of historical facts and resorting to brutal media campaign aimed at tarnishing the image of respected Naga leader Gen. (Retd) Khole Konyak, GPRN/NSCN directs the Chairman and Secretary of Konyak Region of K group, under whose jurisdiction the 31st August statement was carried in the local media, to tender public apology to NSCN Chairman Gen. (Retd) Khole Konyak through the media, within seven (7) days failing which the Konyak Region GPRN/NSCN will initiate appropriate action as per the National Yehzabo and Konyak customary law. GPRN/NSCN also appeal to Konyak frontal organisations and general public to seek the truth with regard to August 31 statement of K group accusing Gen. Khole Konyak and Konyak national workers of massacring Tangkhul brothers. The commitment, the bravery, the sacrifice rendered towards the Naga Nation by Konyak patriots over many decades will be given its rightful place in Naga history. Haphazard press statements distorting Naga history will not be forgiven.
