Gunmen hurl bullets at Honito villagers inside Intangki forest

Dimapur, July 24 (MExN): In another incident inside the Intanki Forest Reserve, residents of Honito Village were reported attacked by unidentified gunmen July 23 morning. However, with the timely intervention of the district administration team from Jalukie, led by the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil), Officer-in-charge, Police and IRB, a bloody situation is reported to have been averted. This is the second such incident in less than a month inside the Intanki Forest Reserve.
According to sources, the gunmen did not enter the village but fired from a distance inside the forest. The villagers retaliated by firing their bore guns. No one was injured and it was probably a “warning” to the villagers, sources said.  Deputy Commissioner of Peren, Khrienuo Metha on being contacted said the officials and police posted in the disturbed area heard “blank firing” Saturday morning. She said that it could be ascertained as to who the armed men were. A detailed report is yet to be received, she added.  Honito village with about 20 households is located near ‘Inavi Village’ occupying land between Intanki and the Dhansiri River.
An eviction drive was carried out earlier this year where 13 houses and other properties were destroyed.
GB of Honito Village, Ghokishe Achumi has alleged in a press note that “armed miscreants attacked the village at about 9 am and fired upon the villagers.” However, he added, the “villagers were in full alert and were able to retaliate and with the help of the Almighty God prevented the enemy from entering the village.” Honito Village has further reminded the administration and all concerned of earlier appeals of the Western Sümi Hoho (WSH) and Western Sümi Kükami Hoho (WSKH) on April 25, 2011, and also the representation submitted to the State government by the Honito village on April 28 to immediately sanction one IRB Post at Honito village.
