A ‘Guru Shishya Parampara Kendra’ was inaugurated today at Mopungchuket village of Mokokchung district under the Guru Shishya Parampara Scheme of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India and implemented by the North East Zone Cultural Council (NEZCC) in the field of folk songs and dances.

Guru S. Pangyang Ozüküm while speaking the inauguration of the Kendra said that he was one of the candidates selected by NEZCC from among 67 applicants for the scheme. He also informed that the NEZCC under the scheme selected the Kendra or center for a period of one year and that he will be assisted by an accompanist to train four “shishyas” or students who will also be provided stipends.

The Guru said that interested individuals were welcome to join the “shishyas” to learn at his “Kendra.” He also encouraged the youngsters to learn folk songs, dances and cultural practices as it was equally important as academics and one’s faith.

Tazü Lenten Cultural Society (TLCS) president Nükshitemjen while speaking at the inaugural said that Guru S. Pangyang Ozüküm, who founded the club in 1983, was a tall figure among his contemporaries in the field of folk culture and tradition. He also said that the Guru Shishya Parampara Kendra was akin to the traditional Arju or morung practice of the Ao Nagas where the youngsters learnt folk culture from the elders. Mopungchuket village council elder Kümsangyanger while congratulating Guru S. Pangyang Ozüküm said that this was the first of its kind scheme in the village.
