Gauhati High Court (GHC) chief justice Ashutosh Kumar today told the members of the High Court Bar Association (HCBA) Nagaland that they have a special responsibility for delivering justice.
Addressing the reception programme organised in his honour at Bar Room of High Court Bar Association in Kohima, Kumar urged upon the lawyers to take greater role of upholding justice and tradition.
In a representation submitted to the Chief Justice, the High Court Bar Association Nagaland President CT Jamir and General Secretary Joshua Sheqi stated that the GHC has a total of 24 Judges at present out for which 18 are from the state of Assam, 3 from Mizoram, 2 from Arunachal Pradesh and one from the state of Nagaland.
The Association stated that appointment of Judges in the past had been done from the state of Nagaland from amongst the members of the Bar and Judicial officer of the lower judiciary.
It stated that there is only one High Court Judge (Justice Yarenjungla Longkumer) from the state of Nagaland under the GHC, who has been elevated to the bench from the Judicial service.
The Association informed that there are many advocates and judicial officers from the state who are capable to be considered for appointment as High Court judges as being a welfare state, it only feels appropriate to have proportionate representations in the higher echelon of judicial service.
In this, the Association requested Chief Justice to give consideration for appointment of High Court Judges from the state of Nagaland.
It stated that the HCBA Nagaland has a total strength of 264 advocates and at present it have only three designated Senior Advocates from the state of Nagaland, whereas there are so many capable Advocates who can be considered for designation as Senior Advocates.
In this; the Association made a plea to Chief Justice to consider the case on a priority basis.
