Hearing on NPF case against seven MLAs to continue today

Dimapur | February 8

Court hearing on the Interlocutory Application (IA) filed by the NPF against 7 of its dissident MLAs will continue on February 9. The IA was filed at the Kohima Bench of the Gauhati High Court on February 1 seeking the court’s intervention to restrain the 7 MLAs from attending the upcoming Nagaland Assembly Legislative session starting on February 12 pending a final verdict on the main Writ Petition filed by the NPF in July 2020.

The court order issued on February 1 stated that the “respondents” (MLAs named in the main Writ Petition filed by the NPF) should be given an opportunity to reply to the February 1 IA, while listing it for hearing on February 8 “along with the connected matters.”

There was no word on the day’s proceedings with NPF Legislature Party leader TR Zeliang out of reach for comment. The Morung Express was able to get through to NPF Spokesperson Achumbemo Kikon and MLA Imkong L Imchen in the evening but both replied that they did not get updates on the day’s court proceedings.

Meanwhile, sources in the petitioners’ (NPF) camp informed that the hearing will continue on February 9 as well.

The main Writ Petition was filed by the NPF in July 2020 challenging the legality of a judgment passed by the Speaker of the NLA in connection to a petition filed by the former in the Assembly seeking the disqualification of 7 NPF MLAs for allegedly going against a collective diktat of the party.

The 7 MLAs had declared their support for the ruling PDA candidate in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
