Hoho suggests “Customary law” for Rape cases

Dimapur, February 13 (MExN): Western Yimchungru Hoho (WYH) has suggested employing Naga customary law as per the provision enshrined under Article 371 (A) of the Constitution of India” to deal with crimes such as rape. The ‘hoho’ also advised further that rather than condemning, civil organizations should come up with suggestions to deal with crimes ‘irrespective of their status, locals or non-locals.’

The ‘hoho’ expressed sadness at the recent rape incidents in Nagaland, including the reported gang-rape of a Naga woman by non-locals at Burma Camp in Dimapur and another case, the reported rape of a 13 year old Naga girl by a Naga in Phek.

“While expressing empathy to the victims and the family, the WYH would like to suggest to the different organizations to follow the Naga customary law as per the provision enshrined under Article 371 (A) of the Constitution of India, to deal with such cases,” the ‘hoho’ said in a note appended by its publicity secretary Mathew K Janger.

The organization said that crimes such as rape have taken place in the past, but they were ‘compromised’ through “dialogue between the families.” In this regard, the ‘hoho’ has appealed that the culprits be awarded exemplary punishment so such crimes do not reoccur in the future.
