DIMAPUR: Dimapur District authorities today evicted five to six houses in the Sugar Mill area, 6th mile, Dimapur. Reliable sources informed that the Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio visited the said area, and after surveying the site, gave his consent for the eviction. The eviction was carried out in the presence of Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur, Hekali Zhimomi, SDO (Civil) Tarep Imchen, EAC, SDPO Dimapur Vilhousie Peseyie and other officials.

This action was taken as an outcome of encroachment of land belonging to the government. Around twelve families were rendered homeless after their houses were dismantled by personnel of the 11 IRB and trainees of the Nagaland Armed Police. The trainees were also reportedly carrying out a cleanliness drive around the area. Police vehicles assisted in the transportation of property belonging to the evicted families. It may be mentioned that the families who were earlier residing in the government’s property had been served with eviction notices on previous occasions which they had reportedly refused to pay heed to. When contacted, those who were forced to leave had to say that they were the legal landowners as they had acquired the respective ‘pattas’ of the land.

According to a reliable source, the Dimapur Industrial Center is to be erected on the area where the dismantled houses were previously standing. The defunct Sugar Mill is now reportedly to be used as a bamboo plantation spot. Foreign varieties of bamboo have already been brought in for this purpose.
