Illusions of Grandeur and Shades of Sycophancy

the famous breakfasts that come to my mind are the “Power Breakfasts” of Corporate Honchos of Multinational Corporations and the more widely known and highly regarded “Prayer Breakfasts” hosted by the President of the United States of America. The recent breakfast hosted by our Chief Minister, for a select few bloggers on Facebook was nothing, if not a pale imitation, of a combination of the two; and a transparent attempt to show concern for Nagaland in the few remaining months before the Assembly Elections.

It is a well-known fact that power goes to one’s head; and TR Zeliang is the perfect example of this adage. Having inveigled his way into the C.M.’s Chair, abused the Chair in all possible ways, been summarily evicted from the Chair, then worming his way back into the same Chair, he seems to think that he’s invincible. He’s under the illusion that he’s a great statesman with Plenipotentiary Powers to use Nagaland as he pleases, even to extent of making us look like beggars. He’s become so used to going to Delhi, with Begging Bowl in hand, pleading and beseeching The Powers that be in Delhi for the latest hand-out, that he forgot himself, and instead of playing the Gracious Host to the Koreans and Japanese, began begging them to do something for us; the former to do something for Nagaland University and the latter to build our roads.

I don’t know how many were invited, but 11 attended, and word has it that some refused the invitation. I cannot find words to express my admiration and respect for those who refused the invitation; for one can always find ways to justify Dining with the Devil Himself, let alone our Imp of a Chief Minister. Some attendees tried to justify their attendance by stating that they were going to discuss the problems that plague Nagaland, overlooking the obvious fact that they were going to meet The Root of All Our Problems. The result was a piece of paper asking our Chief Secretary to consider the possibility of opening a Higher Secondary School and a College in Dimapur. So students can look forward to enrolling in these two institutions, which I’m sure will be built in a few short months, before the Assembly Polls. There was no question raised about the 2 bridges, the collapsed bridge and the closed off bridge, both across the Dhansiri River. These two bridges have been causing Hell for Students and Parents alike; no question as to why so many Teachers under the S.S.A. aren’t being paid; no question as to why Student Scholarships had been delayed for so long, and why it’s being paid in arbitrary instalments; no question why children across Primary Schools in Nagaland don’t get Midday Meals regularly. These and a thousand other questions concerning the problems facing the young of Nagaland could have been brought up.

But I guess our forefathers’ Head Hunting Spirit has disappeared in some of our young, only to be replaced by the Good Old Spirit of Chamchadari. It sickens me at the way we roll over like obedient dogs whenever these thieves so much as snap their fingers. Allegations have surfaced that envelopes changed hands during the course of the Breakfast/Meeting; if so, I hope their contents are enough to assuage the guilt inherent in the knowledge that the food you ate was snatched from the mouths of the Children of the Poor, studying in the Government Primary Schools across Nagaland, and the money you received was meant to be paid to the Teachers of these Children.

Our Dumb Jackasses of Politicians are not the problem, it is the Dumb Assess who vote for them and who are ever ready to harken to their slightest whim that are the Root of All Evil in Nagaland.

GOD SAVE OUR NAGALAND
