In ‘dry’ Nagaland, July-December IMFL seizures over 68K bottles in Dimapur alone

Dimapur, December 14 (MExN):  A total of 68,818 seized bottles of assorted brands of liquor Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) along with 51 litre of country liquor were destroyed in a combined destruction programme in Dimapur on December 14. 

The destruction of the seized liquor was carried out by the District Excise Dimapur & Mobile Squad at Excise Directorate, Dimapur.   

The destroyed IMFLs, with the total estimated value of Rs1.05 crore, were those seized from July-December 2021, informed a press release from T Arilong Longkumer, Superintendent of Excise, Dimapur.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Excise Hotolu Swu, while lauding Dimapur District Excise and the Mobile Squad’s performance at the ‘Destruction Programme,’ saying it was one of the largest record seizures in the recent times, the release said. 

However, he noted that was just the “tip of the iceberg as the volume of liquor inflow has increased in recent years.”

To this end, the Commissioner called for a “serious revisit” of the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (NLTP) Act status by the State Government and underscored that “it was high time to review the entire issue surrounding the liquor prohibition regime,” it added. 

Swu also exhorted the personnel to keep up the good work in the right spirit. 

The Deputy Commissioner of Excise Chanlei Angh, chairing the programme, also feted the units’ achievement despite the pandemic scenario and encouraged new recruits to follow the leads of the senior.

“The system of merit-cum-seniority will pay dividends for those that display dedication and devotion,” he added.  

As per the release, a brief reports on the seizures were read out by the Superintendents of Excise, Dimapur & Mobile Squad during the programme. 

Altogether 213 IMFL offences were registered under the NLTP Act'89 and the revenue realised against these cases was Rs 4, 46,000, it added.
