Students and staffs of Unity College celebrated their cultural day on the theme, “In tune with our roots: our culture, our identity” at the college’s premises located in Residency colony, Dimapur on December 17.
Dr Orenthung Ovung, Unity College Administrator, in his address said that the event is about commemorating culture with an aim towards rediscovering our roots. It is also to remind oneself of the tangible and intangible cultural heritage that has been in existence for generations. At the same time, he reminded the gathering that preserving culture does not mean disrespecting other people’s culture. ‘Culture has been known since the existence of man. Every individual has a distinct identity, attitude and behaviour. It is only through appreciating each other’s culture that we live in harmony as a community,’ he stated.
As such, cultural events such as this one brings people together in shared experiences at regional and national levels, he said further adding that, “Our cultural heritage keeps our memory alive.” In conclusion he called upon all the students and staffs to appreciate and feel proud of each of their own culture.
During the event, the students displayed a colourful array of traditional songs and dances such as the Zeliang folk dance, Anghs: Mongli Mongmei, Yarü Ken: Kentula. Narration on log drum of Monyakshu village, folk ballad, Misrita: fusion music, temiem ken, Aahoh and Gujarati folk dance.
