The inaugural Yimyu Football League got underway at the D.I.E.T. Ground, Yimyu Ward, on November 7 under the theme “Honour Heritage, Ignite Talent”.

Organised by the Yimyu Youth Association, the league brings together six teams — Philio FC, Metis FC, Aristos FC, Etos FC, Protos FC and Virtus FC.

Each team has around 40 players, bringing together participants across different generations. The players range from veterans aged up to 60 years to those below 15 years.

In his exhortation, Mokokchung District Planning Officer N. Chuba Phom said the league was initiated to provide young people with a platform to develop their abilities and character.

He said sportsmanship taught players to be humble, determined and positive, and encouraged them to learn from both teammates and opponents. He added that the league aimed to produce not only footballers but also responsible leaders for society.

The special guest, Atsungba Walling, NCS, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung, described football as a universal language played and followed across the world.

Acknowledging the lack of adequate sports infrastructure in the district, Walling urged players not to lose heart. Citing football legends such as Pelé and T. Ao, he said they had risen to prominence despite limited facilities.

He also commended the organisers for introducing a league format that would continue over an extended period rather than conclude after a short tournament. He said the format would help players maintain consistency and improve their performance.

Walling expressed hope that players from Yimyu would eventually go on to represent Mokokchung district, Nagaland and the country at the national level.

The opening ceremony featured a short address by the Yimyu Ward Council, a prayer for the league by Rev Puryapang of Yimyu Baptist Church and the oath-taking ceremony for players.

The first season of the Yimyu Football League will continue until August 2027.
