A 24 year-old youth was arrested by the police in connection with the murder of the chowkidar of the Inter State Bus Terminus complex in Purana Bazaar, Dimapur. The suspect was arrested in Mon early this morning by the Mon police.
As per the Dimapur police, it was able to piece together crucial clues to narrow down the suspect, who was said to have been living in the same neighbourhood as that of the victim, close to the ISBT complex. Alongwith the CCTV footage and other clues, the trail led to the house of the suspect, where the police further found compelling evidence linking the murder to the youth, who was identified as one Noknyei Konyak.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, Vesupra Kezo disclosed that clothes bearing blood stains were found at the suspect’s house. Further background check revealed that he had a history and was once caught in the act by the chowkidar in the ISBT complex. That time he was reportedly let off with a warning.
He was believed to have taken flight after the murder, taking a night bus to Mon on the evening of August 24. The Mon police was alerted and the suspect was arrested the following morning when the bus landed in Mon.
Kezo informed that a police team was on the way to Mon to take custody of the suspect. While circumstantial evidence pointed to getting caught in the act of burglary, this was still to be confirmed.
The victim, Hozheto Yepthomi (58 years), was found dead in a pool of blood on the morning of August 24. He was said to have left his quarters, located adjacent to the ISBT at around 4:00 am to open the gate for the day’s activities to begin during which he was believed to have come across a burglar. His lifeless body was discovered some 2-3 hours later with stab wounds. A CCTV footage collected by the police showed the victim chasing after a man.
