Now more than ever, tree plantation drives has increased through community initiative and support from government departments. Tree saplings of different varieties are often distributed at different levels and mass distribution drives are held on intervals.
However, the key to achieving sustainability and survival rests in 'maintenance'. Noting the importance of this aspect, the Jakhama Youth Organization (JYO) will be focusing on the maintenance of tree saplings in the next 5 years.
Through the theme, reimagining Jakhama as a sustainable village, Dr Kelühol Tase, the JYO General Secretary said that the main area of focus to be taken up by the youth body was on Environment and Agriculture; Leadership and Governance among which, a broad vision on the way forward was to plant 10000 saplings.
A short programme to commemorate the event was held in the village vicinity. The villagers also observed a genna by taking a day off from the paddy fields, praying for rainfall in the region.
Suggesting best practices for ensuring sustainability, Tase said that the plantation will be on competition basis which will run for a span of 5 years. Yearly assessment will be done and best performing khel will be selected. Trees will be planted along the approach road to the village from the National Highway stretching over 6 kilometres.
Stressing the need to preserve the environment, Senior Superintendent of Police, Kohima Kevithüto Sophie said that the lack of initiatives to protect the natural biodiversity has resulted in endangering our reserves and impacting climate changes largely experimenting in current times.
He therefore impounded the need to explore avenues to help the community and protect the environment in the chosen profession.
He reminded the youth to think outside the box and beyond government jobs while not confining to acquiring degrees.
Village Council chairman Zhopo Kirha lamented practices in the past and present where trees were felled in huge quantities or cleanliness drive were adversely conducted. However, ingenious practices need to be cultivated, he added.
Forest & Biodiversity Committee, Phema Khel Jakhama and Viwora Forest Area, Viwomi Community, Jakhama were felicitated for their contribution to conservation.
