Jimmy Carter advocated for political settlement of Indo-Naga problem: NNC (PB)

Dimapur, January 4 (MExN): The Naga National Council (Parent Body) has condoled the demise of the Former President of the United States of America, the late Jimmy Carter, one of the finest world leaders in recent history.

In a press release, V Nagi, General Secretary, Naga National Council (Parent Body) said that Carter worked for peaceful settlements for political conflicts, highlighted human rights violations and climate change issues, and, “in particular, he advocated for a political settlement of the Indo-Naga problem.”

Nagi said that Carter was the world leader who showed real concern for the political plight of the Naga people and the internal conflict of the National Workers since the 1980s. It was in 1997 that the North American Baptist Fellowship convened the Atlanta Meet to try to achieve unity between the four Naga National Political Groups by inviting church leaders and the Naga Hoho for consultation and conflict resolutions. It was Carter’s Center that expressed a genuine concern for the unity of the Nagas and political settlement with the Government of India, he stated.

“This historic meeting will always shine in the annals of the political history of the Naga people. Moreover, this noble leader showed his unfailing concern and support throughout. When we had the first Chiang Mai, Thailand, meeting in 2008, he even wrote a personal letter to the delegates expressing his profound wish for Naga reconciliation and political settlement with the Government of India. He was a leader with unflinching concern and support for the Naga people and their freedom,” the NNC (PB) reiterated.

“Thus, the Naga people in particular have lost a noble and great leader who stood for Naga reconciliation and a political settlement with the Government of India,” the press release stated.

“I, who was one of the representatives in the Atlanta Meet in 1997, will always remember and cherish the noble deeds and support for the Naga Cause of this great leader. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Nagi added.
