Justice Lodha praises customary court in resolving disputes, delivering justice

Justice R.M. Lodha, Judge, Supreme Court of India today inaugurated a Legal Aid Clinic here in the presence of Justice A.K. Goel, Chief Justice of Gauhati Court, Justice K. Meruno, Judge Gauhati High Court and Justice A.K. Goswami, portfolio Judge, Kohima bench and Judge Gauhati High Court. 

The purpose of the Legal Aid Cell is to promote access to the legal system, whereby every person is able to invoke the legal process irrespective of social or economic incapacity.

Speaking on the occasion, Justice Lodha was all praise for the functioning of the customary court and Dobashi court in resolving disputes and delivering justice, which, he said brings happiness and satisfaction. Stating that one went out of such courts with happiness and not as enemy but as friend, he encouraged the people to upkeep this system.  Also speaking on the occasion Justice Goel said that Legal Aid Clinic is manned by legal volunteers and it provides a platform to the people to get legal rights and access to legal aid.

Later, the Kohima Law College Kohima organised a short programme at the Durbar Hall, Raj Bhavan. The programme was chaired by Kezhokhoto Savi, Advocate and Lecturer Kohima Law College.

Justice R.M. Lodha in his speech advised the lawyers present not to make the legal profession into a business, trade, or money making mill. Stating that ethical life is much more valuable, he urged upon them to get respect of people and engage in providing legal help to the society.

Another programme was organised by Gauhati High Court Kohima bench and Justice & Law Department at Hotel Japfu to honour the visiting judges. Special songs were performed by the Orphanage Home, Cherry Blossom School, Kohima and DGP band. The programme was compered by Rosemary Dzuvichu.
