Khonoma road & bridge in trouble

Dimapur, October 15 (MExN): Khonoma village today sought the BRTF (GREF) to tend to a fallen bridge on a road between the village and another, Jotsoma. The Dzuna Bridge between the two villages fell into the river on October 9 cutting off the people from the interiors. Related to the matter, Khonoma village also lamented that assurances and agreement signed over constructing a double-lane road continues to remain on the shelf.

Khonoma village consented to the Border Roads Organization (BRO) to “take up the proposed road sector” for construction of a double-lane road, the Kohima-Pedi-Peren (till Kilometer 95) stretch. This included 21 kilometers of Khonoma land and the construction would be taken up by the BRO (GREF), Khonoma Village Council said today in a note.

“Considering the viability of economic development and smooth transportation of this road on the public’s welfare, the Khonoma Village Council has agreed to donate the required land for the construction of the road free of cost between kilometer 13 till kilometer 34; that is in the jurisdiction of Khonoma and also not to make any demand for compensation from the BRTF (GREF).

The village has also offered to extend full cooperation to the BRTF (GREF) in the construction of the road “as per laid down standards, specifications and guidelines.” The village will also provide necessary manpower and “security” as may be required from time to time. But three months have passed now after the agreement was made. “We have been looking forward to immediate take up of the construction works as well as maintaining the existing road soon after issuing the NOC (‘no objection certificate’) but to no affect till now,” the council said.

The authorities in concern, especially the BRTF and the administration are asked to look into the matter and also reconstruct the bridge without loss of time, to ease the hardships faced by the people of the area.
