Khuzama has ‘highest production of potato’

The Department of Agriculture today organized a programme on Rodent Campaign at Khuzama, the ‘highest producing potatoes in the state’, with Director of Agriculture, A.Y. Ovung as the Chief Guest.

Speaking at the inaugural function, Ovung said, earlier period, measures to safeguard the crops were not known, be it by natural calamities, by animals or insects, yet these days with the help of various steps, crops can be protected and farmers can boast rich harvesting. Ovung also said, as Khuzama has the highest production of potato, likewise the department dispatch highest seed to the village with the intention to produce the highest production without any hesitation for the state. He also urged the farmers, not to depend solely on subsidies from the government. “Don’t wait for subsidy; leave aside that attitude as it will not help you. Government’s policy is to push you to what you are doing,” said Ovung and added that technical education will be provided on farming. The Director also stated that management is best in Khuzama village and if it is followed accordingly, Nagaland will be in a better position in Agriculture.

Joint Director, Agri, T.V Holo in his brief address said farmers should look and work on new innovation, and should count on the profit gained as potato is main source of income generation in the village. During the technical session, SDO (Store) Dimapur, N.Jacob Yanthan displayed on control of Rodent with traps.

The department also distributed Rodenticide roban to the farmers. It may be mentioned that the farmers carry four varieties of potatoes, kufri jyoti, kufri badsha, kufri chandramuthi, kurfi chandan, cultivates in 400 acres with 1280 MT (Metric Tones) for production, which values more than 1.9 crore.

It is also said that Local storage is also available in the village and even the government has a plan to raise cold storage in future. One of the farmer said potatoes are supplied to Dimapur in bulk, local market in Kohima and also the department obtain and dispatch to different district. More than 300 farmers participated in the Rodent Campaign.

Earlier, the programme was chaired by District Agriculture Officer, G.Ikuto Zhimomi and vote of thanks was pronounced by Agriculture Officer, M. Patton. Joint Secretary, Agri, I. Panger and Rt. Managing Director, Salie also spoke on Rodent campaign.
