Dimapur Athletics Association celebrated Kids’ Athletics day under this year’s theme, ‘World Mile Challenge’ at Pilgrim Higher Secondary School ground, Full Nagarjan on May 7.

This is part of the annual celebration of World Athletics, the international governing body for the sport of athletics, the purpose of which is to inspire the next generation of athletes.

More than 50 school children aged between 7-9 years took part from across Dimapur and Chümoukedima took part in two events, 50 meter race and 4x50 meter relay race for boys and girls.

President of Dimapur Athletics Bithungo Kikon mentioned that organising such events for children will aim to nurture young talents, as envisioned in the Catch Them Young programme.

Theja Khate, General Sec for Dimapur Athletics Association (DAA) noted that while Nagaland has no dearth of talents in regard to athletics, the need right now is to instill a competitive edge at an early age among children. “So this platform is meant to provide such an avenue where children from different schools get to interact, compete and learn,” he said.

At the same time, he regarded the support from parents as a crucial factor to motivate students to build a career in the field of sports and athletics. The roadmap has been laid out to build the next generation of Olympians from the State, he said. As Nagaland has been affiliated to World Athletics now, the responsibility lies with each district to oversee that events are meticulously organised on par with international standards.

However, resource constraints also become a challenging factor for district level associations such as Dimapur Athletics. Since we are self-funded, a huge drawback right now is lack of funding, he shared. Currently, the district has no proper track or field for the athletics or any proper infrastructure. “If that can be addressed at the earliest, I’m sure Dimapur will be a place from where the best athletes will come,” he remarked.
