Maintaining that there is “very little to be expected” unless the election system is changed to a cleaner practise in the state, Commissioner & Secretary, Y Kikheto Sema, IAS laid strong emphasis on mass participation towards the clean election initiative of the NBCC.

He was exhorting a gathering of revival programme at Akuhaiqa in Northern Sumi area organized by the SBAK (Nito Mount) on Sunday morning.

Kikheto pointed out that in spite of NBCC’s best efforts towards the clean election campaign, there was hardly any change in the people’s mindset. He was of the view that the subject on clean election may even be taught in Sunday Schools and elementary education as part of a syllabus.

“Clean election campaign should not be only during election time but should be carried out throughout the year,” he added.

Kikheto further asserted, “Unless clean election is carried out in letter and spirit, we cannot expect to have good leaders and development in our land and we cannot blame politicians but blame ourselves.”

Emphasising on the importance of education, Kikheto said equal importance should be given to building infrastructure for the schools like that of Church buildings.

Touching upon the topic of Naga unity, Kikheto told the Sumi community that they have bigger role to play towards this aspect since they share boundaries with most of the tribes in the state. He also called upon the Northern Sumi people to share good relations with neighbouring Assam.

He said the Northern Sumis have been blessed with fertile land and urged them to explore sustainable means of livelihood other than jhumming which affects the environment and ecology.

Kikheto also spoke about revival crusades and remarked that people were reviving but not changing and called for a visible change after such programmes.

More than 3000 delegates attended the 3-day programme which culminated on January 12.
