Kiphire, June 1 (MExN): Kiphire district marked World No Tobacco Day by organising events in all the health units and educational institutions in the respective places on May 31.
The main function held at Government Higher Secondary School, Kiphire with more than 450 students along with the teachers, staffs and medical department, stated a DIPR report.
During the function prizes for essay and slogan writing competition were given away by the chief guest, D Robin, ADC Kiphire. He also launched the Tobacco free Youth Campaign by releasing the IEC material printed for the youths of the District.
Addressing the gathering he advised the students to stay away from all sorts of tobacco and concentrate more on study and other creative activities rather than indulging in self-destructive vices.
Speaking on the theme ‘We need food, not Tobacco,’ Dr Manen Konyak, Neurologist District Hospital Kiphire stressed on to raise the awareness about the alternative crop production and marketing opportunities for tobacco farmers and encourage them to cultivate sustainable nutritious crops. He sensitised the students how consumption of tobacco leads to various disease and disability and harms nearly every organs of the body, as smoking remains the leading cause of preventable disease, disability and death dreadfully affecting not only the user but whole family.
Dr N Moa Jamir, District Nodal Officer, National Tobacco Control Programme highlighted the latest data of Tobacco use in Nagaland and ill effects of tobacco in power point presentation thereby creating awareness to the students. Dr Wekhro Mero, Junior Dental Surgeon led in taking the Anti-Tobacco Pledge.
Meanwhile, subject toppers in NBSE exam 2023 was awarded by GHSS Kiphire, Vice Principal, Lhoukuo.
