The National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell of Kohima College in collaboration with Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India, has organised Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat & Yuva Connect programme on August 7 at the College premises under the theme “Empowered Youth, Drug Free India, Strong Nation, Bright Future.”
Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat is a youth-led movement encouraging every citizen to choose a healthier, drug-free future through awareness, action, and community participation.
United under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, the NSS volunteers vowed to building a drug-free society and Viksit Bharat.
Later, they took a drug-free pledge, administered by Youth Icon Flora Kent, and reaffirmed their commitment to stay away from drugs and substance abuse.
Maintaining that youth are the energy of any nation, and the power of youth has an important contribution in the development of society and country, the NSS volunteers joined a drug-free India campaign and vowed do everything possible to make a drug- free country.
Earlier, Kent said that Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan was launched by Government of India on August 15, 2020. So far, over 29.26 crore people have been sensitized through grassroot outreach across all districts, reaching 11.17 crore youth in the country.
28.30 lakh people have been treated across more than 730 De- addiction centre and counselling facilities. Over 1.67 crore students from 1 lakh educational institution across the country have taken Nasha Mukt pledge.
Substance abuse steals youth energy, health
Kent said that the substance abuse has silently steals the energy, health and ambition of the youth. One addiction will cause many losses in term of health, education, career and family, she said. The biggest loss caused by addiction is that it doesn't just take away one’s health but it take away their future. It doesn't just steal today's happiness, but it also steals tomorrow's happiness, she said.
Kent urged upon the students to stay away from drugs and other harmful substances, emphasising that the future of society depends on informed, healthy and responsible young citizens. Further, she stressed on the need to help someone struggling with addiction to receive treatment, counselling and rehabilitation.
‘Make the right decisions in life’
Pradeep J, District Youth Officer, MY Bharat, Kohima and Wokha informed that MY Bharat is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, which act as technology- enabled platform for youth development and youth led development.
MY Bharat connect youth belonging to 15-25 years with government, educational institutions, NGOs and industry through volunteering, experiential learning, leadership and civic engagement. Currently, more than 2.2 crore youth across the country have registered on the MY Bharat platform.
Kohima College Principal Dr Vitsosie Vupru stressed the importance of creating awareness on substance abuse and encouraged the students to make the right decisions in life. The programme also featured the screening of the MY Bharat, Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue (VBYLD) and Nasha Mukt activities.
NSS PO Zavikhoto Phinyo introduced the Youth Icon and dignitaries present at the programme. The programme was chaired by NSS PO Khekali Sema, while NSS volunteer Hichulo Magh, BA 3rd Semester, proposed vote of thanks.
