Kohima Dist farmers’ resolve for quality augmentation

Kohima, April 26 (MExN): Several motions were resolved at the recently concluded Kohima District Farmers Conference held at Kohima from April 19-20 last. During the plenary session with the participation of more than 500 farmers and all ten heads of Agri & Allied departments, the resolution committee headed by Kohima Deputy Commissioner deliberated at length taking into account all presentations, suggestions, questions and demands of district farmers.

The following resolutions were adopted for the district and the same is being forwarded to the government/APC for further necessary action. Resolution for short term objectives: It was resolved that the following crops will be declared as commercial crops of the district. Potato, Ginger, Chow-Chow (Squash) while Resolution for long term objectives include that focus as cash crops of the district be given to Chudi (King Chilly), Passion Fruit, Lilium, medicinal/Aromatic Plants, Eri Food plant and Bamboo.

It was also resolved that the following farming systems will be given another priority in the district to increase Cereal production specially rice, it being staple food. The district being deficit in food grain, the focus should be to increase production and achieve food security. In promotion of dairy/poultry/piggery products focus would be to increase milk and meat production which the district possess high potentials of both market and production.

To promote paddy-cum-fish culture for increasing fish production in the district, the focus would be to minimize fish-import to the district. To promote organic farming by mass production of organic compost by adopting Vermi culture, Bokashi and Bio-composting in all the villages of the district focus would be on organic production by all villages. Other general recommendation for the district are promotion of fodder cultivation to reduce pressure on natural forests and encourage re-generation by using fast growing local species, development of medium irrigation project in the district, establishment of cold storage specially for vegetables, potato, ginger and fruits, enforcement of APMC Act 2005 and Cattle Trespass Act 1985 in full; farmers exposure trips, formation of marketing co-operative societies, control of forest fire and fish poisoning, medium food processing unit specially for Ginger and potato, easy availability of agricultural credit to farmers and coverage of crop insurance scheme etc. This was informed by A.
