A candlelight vigil was held today in memory a 22-year-old woman young athlete whose body was found near at Old Ministers’ Hill Colony, Kohima, on October 25.

The Kohima Police has formed a Special Investigating Team to probe the death.

The vigil, held at D Khel Basketball Court, Seikhazou, on Wednesday evening, was organised by the Kohima District Basketball Association (KDBA) and Team ABC, where heartfelt tributes were paid to the departed player.

It is a gathering under the ‘heaviest of circumstances,’ dealing not only with a loss but with a tragic act of violence that has stolen a bright light from the world, KDBA President Khrielaskuo Keretsü said. ‘The pain is immeasurable, but so is the love we have for her.’

Recalling her impact as a player on and off the court, Keretsü said she represented the KDBA and won gold at the Nagaland Olympics 2022. She also represented the state in the Under-23 National Basketball Championship earlier this year.

“She didn’t just play the game; she was the heart of the game. She was a role model for every kid who watched her play, proving that hard work and a good spirit could take you anywhere,” he maintained.

Condemning what he termed a “cruel and senseless act,” the KDBA President said the “brutal and unimaginable tragedy” has left them with anger and a deep sense of injustice, and asserted that people must continue to fight against the darkness that took her life.

He also urged law enforcement agencies to thoroughly investigate and ensure that the perpetrators face the harshest laws available.

Keretsü extended condolences and solidarity to the bereaved family of the victim, noting that although she is no longer with them, her spirit will live on in everyone.

The legacy of her kindness, discipline, dedication, determination, and hard work will continue to inspire, and her memory will be felt in every basketball game played, in the echo of the bouncing ball and the swish of a perfect shot, he added.

Salew Kadete from Team ABC and Lika Aye paid tribute to the departed player and assured that her legacy of love for basketball will continue.

A member of the Tseminyu District Basketball Association said the young player had inspired many young athletes who watched her play.

Angami Women Organisation (AWO) President Neithono R Sothu also expressed deep shock and sorrow over her mysterious death.

Condemning the heinous crime that claimed the life of a bright and talented young woman, she said that nothing can ever compare to the pain of a mother who has lost her child.

Sothu, while affirming the organisation’s commitment to stand for the safety, dignity, and rights of women, assured that AWO will continue to monitor the case closely until justice is served.
