Konyak Union raises concern over encroachment, backs new wildlife division

Mon, April 27 (MExN): The Konyak Union (KU) has expressed concern over increasing threats such as encroachment, illegal logging and other unchecked human activities affecting the ecological balance of reserved forests in Mon district.

In a statement issued on April 27, the union urged the government to take urgent measures, including deployment of adequate forest personnel, strengthening protection infrastructure, and improving connectivity and basic facilities for effective monitoring.

It also reiterated its call for a joint on-site review involving all stakeholders to ensure timely and practical interventions.

Further, the union appealed to the state government to consider its proposal for a green corridor and other environment-friendly initiatives for long-term conservation.

At the same time, the KU welcomed the inauguration of the Mon Wildlife Division at Mon headquarters on April 21, terming it a significant step towards strengthening wildlife protection and forest governance in the district.

The union expressed appreciation to the Department of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of Nagaland, under the leadership of minister C L John, for the initiative.

It said the new division would enhance conservation efforts in the district, which is endowed with rich forest cover and biodiversity but continues to face multiple wildlife-related challenges.

The KU also appreciated the department’s emphasis on community participation during the inauguration programme.

It further acknowledged recent inspections carried out in reserve forest areas, including the Singphan Wildlife Sanctuary, describing it as an ecologically significant habitat and an important elephant corridor connecting Nagaland and Assam.

The Konyak Union urged the department to intensify public sensitisation programmes on wildlife preservation and environmental protection, noting that awareness in the district remains limited.

The union reaffirmed its commitment to extend full cooperation with the department in safeguarding forest and wildlife resources for present and future generations.
