Konyak Union says no to woman DB

Dimapur, July 17 (MExN):  The Konyak Union today said it opposes appointing women to the post of Doubashi (DB). Interestingly even as the union said to let “some aspects of our society and culture remain the same,” it also clearly mentioned that it was the British who created the post of DB. The KU issued a note today stating opposition to appointing women as DBs.

“During the British occupation they created this post of Doubashi to be a bridge between them and the local people to intervene in any situation requiring attention and resolving it,” the KU stated in a note issued by its vice president and joint secretary. “Now, with great consideration and after much deliberation we have come to the conclusion that we will not allow and will oppose the appointment of a woman as Doubashi. This is not looking down or underestimating womenfolk but to let some aspects of our society and culture remain the same,” the KU claimed in its note.

The KU stated further that the institution of ‘Anghs’ (feudal chiefs) and ‘Morung’ have been ‘fulfilling their duties’ and “the move/consideration to appoint a female DB will not be entertained.”
