Kiphire, December 14 (MExN): KVK Kiphire in collaboration with District Administration, MSK and DRDA Kiphire conducted training cum input distribution programme on “Empowering farm women through improved agricultural practices for livelihood generation” at Longmatra and Sitimi block from December 7 to 11.
Speaking on the occasion, the resource person Sepila Sangtam, AC, Longmatra NSRLM spoke on value addition in agriculture and horticulture crops where the surplus produce can be further processed and additional income can be earned instead of it being wasted.
Emphasising on the value addition, she focussed on ginger, gooseberry and wild apple which is abundantly available locally. She explained in detail about the process and ingredients involved in making ginger, gooseberry and wild apple candy and also gooseberry wine.
Concluding her lecture, she laid emphasis on the importance of value addition and encouraged the women farmers to take up as to increase their income and livelihood.
Temjenna Jamir, SMS, DAMU, KVK Kiphire delivered technical lecture on integrated pest and disease management in important crops, where the use of yellow sticky traps, pheromone traps, neem oil, use of trap crops were encouraged to the farmers.
During the training, awareness on the new Farm Act 2020 was accented to the participant in a nutshell. Importance of Minimum Support Price for the farmers was also highlighted. Suggestion on elimination of middlemen in the marketing channel was discourse as many at times they add the cost of marketing and ultimately makes the final customer’s price higher at the same time the original seller doesn’t get the actual amount of his products.
The programme was attended by Area Coordinators of respective blocks where they took the initiatives in mobilizing the SHGs in various villages.
A total of 120 women farmers were selected from 24 SHG groups from each block covering a total of 10 villages from Longmatra block and 14 villages from Sitimi block. Inputs comprising of yellow sticky traps, garden rake, maize sheller, neem oil and knapsack sparyer were also distributed to all the farmer participants.
The training was sponsored by District Administration, Kiphire under MSK and was co-ordinated by Dr N Khumdemo Ezung, Senior Scientist and Head (i/c), KVK, Kiphire as the training co-ordinator and Temjenna Jamir, SMS (Agro-meteorology) as the training incharge.
