Kyong seek justice for alleged rape

Dimapur, August 16 (MExN): The Kyong community today sought intervention and justice for an alleged rape victim, from the Dimapur administration. A letter to Dimapur’s deputy commissioner jointly appended by all Kyong frontals including the hohos from Dimapur, Chumukedima and Wokha was received here today. The letter alleged rape of a girl in Chumukedima on August 4. Denouncing the alleged rape, the Kyong said a crime against human rights and violating the victim’s right to life has been committed. The rapist has degraded and defiled the soul of the girl, the letter to the DC stated.

“…we consider the years of shame, false guilt, post-traumatic stress disorder, possible pregnancy and thoughts of suicide that a victim of rape goes through and leave a woman feeling exposed, humiliated and traumatized and also causes serious physical and psychological damage,” the Kyong stated. “As law-abiding citizens, we…believe that the truth and justice will prevail in favor of the aggrieved victim through due legal course.” The letter was appended by leaders of the Lotha Hoho, Eloe Hoho Kyong students and others of Dimapur, Chumukedima and Wokha.

The Kyong appreciated what they stated was the bold steps taken by the victim and the aggrieved family against the alleged crime. Many rape victims do not come forward to lodge complaints due to the social stigma attached to sexual offenses, the Kyong stated.

The organizations pleaded the district administration to ensure that the victim gets a fair and quick trail regardless of her position in the society or circumstances – be it a Date Rape, marital rape or rape by an unknown offender. “Convictism should become the norm,” the Kyong stated.

The organizations also appealed for justice “in the least possible time” and that the accused should not be granted bail. “…in the event of the accused being granted bail the proceedings of the court might be vitiated by means of threat, intimidation, coercion from outlaw which may even pose imminent threat on the life of the victim and her relatives,” the letter stated. The latter sought justice stating that this particular case has not only affected the victim but has also hurt the sentiments of the community. “Let it be known to all that justice delayed is justice denied,” the Kyong added.
