Dimapur, April 10 (MExN): Miss Nagaland 1st runner up and reigning Miss Sumi Lika Chophy has completed the first phase of her beauty with a purpose project, ‘Toward a New Vision’ on April 9.

The project is mainly initiated to work towards eradicating child labor, child abuse and to promote education on clean election.

During the first phase, Chophy who is also the district election SVEEP Icon of Zunheboto toured around the three sub divisions of Zunheboto district, imparting education on the aforesaid topics and organized goodwill programmes for vulnerable children. She also visited the government schools in the rural areas under the three sub-divisions where and held interactions with students and teachers on child rights, a press release informed on Sunday.

“Children are the most important resource of our society; we should all work together to create a space where the children can feel safe and basic ‘Right to Education' is provided. Although child protection law exists in Nagaland, the main challenge when it comes to ensuring the protection and safety of children is the lack of standards in terms of what qualifies as child maltreatment,” the release quoted her as saying.

Chophy is also said to have emphasized on creating awareness on skill development and the importance of education amongst the three primary stakeholders - the children, the parents and guardians on the subject of child abuse i.e., physical, mental, emotional and sexual abuse.

She also worked on promoting education on ‘Clean Elections’ with an objective to let people know the importance of their vote and the rights they possess through their vote.

She said that education on the clean election is the need of an hour, as every citizen who has attained the voting age need to be aware of their rights, as their single vote can change the scenario of Nagaland. She added that, we are the decision makers to either turn Nagaland into a better place or make it worse based on how we interpret clean election.

According to the release, Chophy aims to change mindsets through her project which will gradually but definitely create a society where all youths, women, orphans and vulnerable children will advocate for equal participation in development and make informed choices.
