Villagers engaged in digging trenches for the springshed development project at Lukikhe village.
Aghunato, November 20 (MExN): For the people of Lukikhe village under Aghunato Sub-Division which is located on a hill top, water scarcity was one of the biggest problems. However, with the intervention of the department of Land Resources (LRD), a springshed development project which was initiated in 2016 has brought water security for the villagers.
According to a press release from the Lukikhe Village Council Chairman Akavi Katty and GB Lashito Yeptho, the project was implemented through the District Project Officer, LRD.
The programme was aimed to recharge the dried up stream ‘Kili ghoki,’ which was once a water supply source for the village. However, due to deforestation and shifting cultivation the stream had dried several years ago, it said.
The department of Land Resources started the springshed work around the catchment area of the stream and constructed more than one thousand trenches. These activities also provided ample opportunity for the villagers to earn daily wages, the release stated.
Subsequently, the villagers began to see water being discharged in this stream, increasing in quantity year after year, and in 2019, the department constructed a water reservoir at the source where discharged water was collected.
The release stated that in 2020, some senior officers from the directorate along with the District Project Officer visited the project and assured the villagers that they would provide pipes so that water from ‘Kili ghoki’ ‘would reach the village.
Soon after, the department fulfilled its commitment and the village now has water supply from the recharged water source, it stated.
“Like any other Naga villages our village is located at the hill top and the water scarcity was one of the biggest problems. But now this problem is solved by the intervention of the department,” the release stated while expressing gratitude to the rank and file of the department of Land Resources, on behalf of the village authority and the public of Lukikhe village.
