Major development initiatives for Rengma areas in KAAC

Phentsero, December 29 (MExN): Governor of Assam Prof Jagdish Mukhi has directed heads of various departments under the Government of Assam to look into the grievances of the Rengma Nagas of Assam, the Rengma Naga Peoples’ Council said on Wednesday.

A press release from the RNCP General Secretary Aga Rengma, Governor Mukhi held a meeting with several heads of departments following a memorandum submitted by the Council. A copy of the meeting minutes wherein the various issues relating to the lack of basic amenities in Rengma areas were discussed was also issued to the media.

As per the minutes, the Governor directed the Principal Secretary, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC)  and the Commissioner & Special Secretary for Public Works, to submit a detailed status and action plan for connecting roads to the Rengma inhabited villages taking into account possibility of constructing road under the department of Agriculture and DRDA also along with PWD (Roads) on January 4, 2022. Along with this, the Governor also sought action plans for construction of four bridges in the region.

On the health sector, the Principal Secretary, Health & Family Welfare Department informed the Governor that the Phangcherop sub-centre and Sarihoti sub-centre which have been constructed by KAAC would be functionalized within January, 2022 and the Principal Secretary, KAAC would do the needful for making the buildings of the PHCs functional. Posting of nurses and ASHA workers in both the sub-centres within January was also discussed.

The minutes stated that five ambulances would be provided by June, 2022 for the district of Karbi Anglong and the Principal Secretary, KAAC would take necessary action for coverage of Rengma Naga villages. It also said that the department would “take initiative for 30 numbers of more sub-centres for the district.”

As per the meeting minutes, by February 2022, the Secretary, Power (E), and CGM (D&S), CAR, APDCL will take action to provide off-grid power connection to households that have been left out. The electrification of villages like Choshentongri and Tseguchangri were also discussed during the meeting and the Secretary, Power (E), will take necessary action to fix responsibility for non-submission of proposal for electrification, the minutes stated.

Further, in the agriculture sector, the Secretary & Director, Agriculture have been entrusted to take necessary steps to cover the entire population of the area under PM Kisan by February 28, 2022 and under RKVY and NFSM/Horticulture by January 31, 2022.
Following the decisions, the RNCP expressed gratitude to the Governor for acknowledging their grievances and delivering his assurances through developmental initiatives. 

Stating that the Rengma Nagas of Assam had been deprived of even the most basic necessities of life since district hood of present Karbi Anglong in 1951, the RNCP said that the decisions taken during the meeting pave way for the people to access the most needed medical sub-centres, electricity, road and bridges as well as central and state schemes.
