‘Make Nagaland free from violence against women’

Nagaland Social Welfare Department Secretary & AHoD, Limawabang Jamir today called upon everyone to stand together and make Nagaland free from violence against women.

Speaking at the observation of “International Day for elimination of Violence against women” at Capital Convention Centre, Kohima, Jamir said the day marks the launch of the UN campaign of the 16 day days of activism against gender-based violence, which will conclude on December 10 in coinciding with   International Human Rights Day.

Jamir encouraged everyone to make their homes, workplace and cyberspace safe.

As envisioned by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India, the Department of Social Welfare, has been observing this day in collaboration with Mission Shakti Nagaland and Nagaland State Rural Livelihoods Mission (NSRLM) under Rural Development department in organising this event to ensure the social and economic empowerment of women in the state, which are most crucial in bringing about gender equality.

Jamir said that the Department of Social Welfare has a dedicated mission for the safety, security, and empowerment of women through Mission Shakti Nagaland.

He said that Sakhi-One Stop Centre has been set up in all 17 districts, which provide integrated support and assistance to women, affected by violence and distress.

The service includes; emergency response, temporary shelter, police assistance, medical assistance, legal counselling and psychosocial support.

So far, One Stop Centres have catered to a total number of 1703 cases of gender- based violence across the state.

The 181 Women Helpline and 1098 Child Helpline comprise the women and child development control room.

Jamir said that Women Helpline provides 24 hours emergency and non emergency response to women affected by violence, and provides information on women related government schemes, programs, and services.

A total of 3,396 calls received from its inception in 2016 till October 2025, which includes gender based violence, and information seeking calls.

“Based on the nature of cases we have received over the years, such as domestic violence, rape, sexual harassment, cyber crime and others,” Jamir said.

Stating that most of the perpetrators of gender based violence were male, he said “Hence, there is an urgent need to sensitize these males from the prevention perspective.”

Keeping this in mind, as per the United Nations appeal, the HeForShe campaign has been initiated.

This movement calls for the involvement of men and boys as agents of change, he said.

Jamir said that the government is committed to ensuring a safe workplace for women, for which it has developed the Sexual Harassment Electronic box (She-Box and online complaint management system to provide a single window access to every woman.

State pledge to ‘never commit’ domestic violence

Nagaland Social Welfare Director, Tosheli Zhimomi administered pledge to the gathering at the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women as part of the launching of 16 days of activism against gender-based violence.

The gathering has taken pledge to “Never commit, condone, or remain silent about domestic violence, sexual harassment, cyber crime or any form of violence in homes, communities, work places and digital spaces.

It has also taken pledge to raise voice and help women who are victimized by gender- based violence, to encourage men and women to mentor children to live violence- free and to educate about healthy relationships.

“Whenever possible, I will report all known, suspected or witnessed incidents of violence against any woman or child to an agency/organization who can assist the victims,” the pledge stated.

Nagaland’s social welfare advisor Wangpang Konyak and others appended signatures for this pledge signature campaign.

This pledge is an initiative of Mission Shakti, Department of Social Welfare to call upon all responsible citizens to help end violence against women in Nagaland and beyond.
