Manipur Education minister, Thokchom Radheshyam spent his time with students of Wangkhem Junior High School as a part of ‘No School Bag Day.’ He said that the policy has been implemented with objectives of making schools a more joyful place of learning and teaching.

Mentioned may be made that on September 3, 2019 “No School Bag Day” was implemented by the Department of Education(S), Manipur for all working Saturdays in respect of all children studying in classes I-VIII all schools within the State.

To organize the “No School Bag Day” in a more structured and purposeful manner, efforts to add various extra and co-curricular activities which are age-appropriate are also being planned.

The minister while interacting with the students asked how they feel being allowed to come to school without school bags and with no classes being conducted on Saturdays. The students told the minister that with no school bags they feel very free and ease in coming to school. Co-curricular activities have helped them overcome the stage fear, they said. They also expressed that they have learnt more about debates, extempore speeches, dances, sports and discussions.

In the meantime, the minister said that it is a very welcoming step that the parents were also present. "It will encourage the children to participate the activities at school. Involvement of parents and other stakeholders is a must for overall development of the school and bring about a more holistic development of a child. The co-curricular activities at school will make the students more ease while approaching the teachers," the minister added.

Th. Radheshyam then said that the policy will help in building positive culture amongst the children, providing platform for innovative ideas and to reduce the stress and harmful effects of carrying heavy bags by the young children. "Education is not just about book and ranks and to get a job. Education is to make a person aware about healthy life, to let others live a good life and earn knowledge to make the world a better place to live in," he added.

Later the ministerial team accompanied by Zonal Education Officer, Arambam Anilkumar and concerned officials visited the Chaoyaima Higher Secondary School, Thoubal wherein the 40th District/Zonal Level Science Exhibition for School Children 2019-20 was held under the theme – Science & Technology for sustainable Development.
