The new ‘Mapang Tongshi’ Clock Tower was inaugurated at Kathing Park, Mokokchung, on August 14. The unveiling of the inaugural plaque was carried out by Sentirenla Jamir, wife of Sharingain Longkumer, Speaker of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly.
Constructed under the ‘Iconic Project’ of the LADP 2024–25 at an estimated cost of Rs 50 lakh, the G+4 structure stands 62 feet tall with a total plinth area of 1,250 sq. ft. The tower features a coffee shop on the ground floor, an art gallery and souvenir shop on the first and second floors, and a viewpoint on the third floor.
Four GPS-synchronized electric clocks, each 90 inches in diameter, adorn its faces, accompanied by a bell that will chime hourly for 15 hours daily. The tower is equipped with night illumination, a rooftop lightning-resistant finial, security fencing, and modern access facilities.
In his address, MMC Councillor MB Longkumer reminisced about the original Clock Tower built in 1976, recalling its historical significance and the community’s attachment to it. He recounted how the old tower, despite multiple restoration attempts, ceased functioning after decades of service. He expressed gratitude to all who contributed to the legacy of the previous structure and lauded the initiative of the NLA Speaker to rebuild a new landmark.
Longkumer urged the people to envision a greater future for Mokokchung, highlighting priorities such as improving education, healthcare, sports facilities, water supply, sanitation, and infrastructure, while balancing development with environmental conservation. “May the new Clock Tower stand tall to witness Mokokchung prosper,” he concluded.
The dedicatory prayer was pronounced by Rev Ponen Longchar, Senior Pastor, Mokokchung Town Baptist Arogo (MTBA). The event also featured “Echoes of Wisdom” from Kosasanger Pusu of Ungma Village and Riongsanger Putu of Mokokchung Village.
The Clock Tower stands on the land donated by the Kichu Clan of Mokokchung Village. The project was initiated by Sharingain Longkumer, Speaker NLA and Chairman DPDB, Mokokchung (2024-2025).
