The District No Tobacco Club Zunheboto, in collaboration with the District Administration, District Hospital, and Reigning Miss Sumi, launched its first phase of the mass awareness campaign on substance abuse and tobacco consumption at Aghunato Town Baptist Church on August 19 last.
Tunavi G Assumi, President of District No Tobacco Club Zunheboto, emphasized the significance of the campaign, particularly for students in classes 6-12. He highlighted that tobacco is a gateway to addiction and must be stopped early.
Kathyinla, EAC Aghunato, expressed concern about tobacco usage in the area and assured the congregation that the administration would also take steps to prohibit tobacco sales near school areas.
Dr. Rosy Yhome, District Nodal Officer, National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP), provided insights into the types of tobacco, causes of addiction, and its harmful effects.
The reigning Miss Sümi 2024, Nikali Shohe, along with her court of honour, Suruhukali Aomi (1st Runner-up) and Alo A Yepthomi (2nd Runner-up), delivered a compelling message on the value of life and the dangers of substance abuse. They concluded their presentation with the impactful slogan “Say no to tobacco, Say yes to Life.”
The programme was chaired by Gloria Phuleshe, Media Secretary of STH, and saw an attendance of 527 students and over 30 guests from Aghunato.
