Dimapur | August 18

The Dimapur police have apprehended one man from Nagaon, Assam, suspected to be behind the May 25 hit and run road incident in Dimapur, which claimed the life of a 20 year-old under-graduate student of St Joseph University. The accused, identified as Dildar Hussain, was arrested in Nagaon and brought to Dimapur on August 18.

The release did not go into details while only stating that the police were able to identify and locate the suspect vehicle through “massive efforts.” It added that the vehicle— a black Scorpio (AS01 AK8524) was in the custody of the Nagaon police in connection with another case and will be brought to Dimapur after completing formalities there.

When contacted for further details, a senior police official disclosed that the Dimapur police had identified the vehicle about two months back following a thorough scrutiny of CCTV footages collected from several entry-exit points. As per the official, the accused owns and drives the Scorpio as a taxi. He reportedly has a history of making trips to Nagaland ferrying passengers on hire and on that fateful day was making his way out of Nagaland.

The official added that after identifying the suspect vehicle, two unsuccessful bids were made by the Dimapur police to arrest the driver on two occasions. His luck ran out when he was eventually arrested by the Nagaon police and subsequently handed over to the Dimapur police on August 18.

As per a Nagaon police social media post, the same vehicle was involved in another road mishap on July 27 in Goroimari, Nagaon, which claimed one life and wounded 15 others. It said that the accused was on the run since then and that the Dimapur police was also on the lookout for the same vehicle in connection with the May 25 incident.

Veg ‘syndicate’
Meanwhile, in an unrelated case, three persons were arrested on August 16 in connection with an “organised syndicate operating in the vegetable wholesale market in Dimapur.” The three accused were identified as Rakesh Kumar, Islam Uddin and Samir Ali, who are said to be smalltime business folks. The release did not explain how the alleged “syndicate” operated, while only stating that the trio were involved in extorting and collecting money from the vegetable market and handing it over to various Naga Political Groups.
