Nagaland PWD (Housing & Mechanical) Minister, Tongpang Ozukum inaugurated Bee Keepers’ Union-cum-Honey Shop at Mima village in Southern Angami area of Kohima district on December 21.

Speaking on the occasion, Ozukum encouraged the villagers not to rear bee as a hobby only but take it up as profession for livelihood sustenance and economic uplift. Appreciating the opening of the honey shop in the village, Ozukum suggested having a honey shop in the state’s capital Kohima. He encouraged the bee-keepers of Mima village stay united and work together for promotion of Mima honey as the product of the village and the State. Ozukum also assured all possible support to Mima village.

Nagaland Horticulture & Border Affairs advisor Mhathung Yanthan said as a honey village, Mima is cradle of honey in Nagaland as it started the activities of beekeeping in the State. Mima is already in the honey map of Nagaland and India with the underground beekeeping the best dominant attraction. He appealed them not to lose the rich tradition passed on by the forefathers.

Stressing on improvising the beekeeping technology, he said that the Horticulture department has taken beekeeping in mission mode and the Nagaland Beekeeping and Honey Mission started because of Mima village. He also appreciated the formation of Mima Bee Keepers’ Union (MBKU) and further encouraged them to improve the quality and value addition while also maintaining a hygienic rearing process. Nagaland honey is considered as unique with more nutrition than other parts of the country, he said.

Nagaland Elections and Technical Education advisor Medo Yhokha encouraged the villagers to continue to maintain the trademark of being a honey village and not just profit oriented. Higher Education & Tribal Affairs Minister, Temjen Imna Along, Youth Resources and Sports Advisor Er Zale Neikha, MLA T Yangseo Sangtam and NDPP General Secretary Ekyimo Kikon also present at the programme.
