A 20-year-old domestic help from Dimapur, who was lured with the promise of a better-paying job, almost ended up as a bonded farmhand in Punjab. The boy however could return home, thanks to the help of a man in Punjab.

The boy was employed by a family in Dimapur before he went missing on March 8, falling prey to human trafficking. Recounting the episode to media persons today in Dimapur, the boy said he was lured by a man, who promised him a better-paying job outside Nagaland. But, he landed up at a farm in Punjab, the exact location of which he could not determine.

According to his account, he was taken till Rangiya, West Bengal by the stranger from where he was handed over to a group of unknown persons. They then handed him over to an unknown man in Punjab, who took the boy under his reins to work at his farm. Realising the job was not what he was promised; he escaped after spending two days at the farm. The boy further said there were two other young boys like him in the custody of the group, but could not tell where they were taken.

Fortunately for him, he was found loitering by a man at a village called Dhali, in Amritsar district. Through the man’s help, he could contact his employer in Dimapur. The employer sought the assistance of the Sikh community in Dimapur, after which the boy was safely returned.

Meanwhile, the employer said that the day after the boy went missing, he received a call from the latter but it could not be completed. According to the boy, his abductors snatched the phone from him, midway into the call. Suspecting foul play, the employer lodged a complaint at West Police Station. After the lapse of few days, the employer received another call. But this time, it was from the man, identified as one Major Singh, who found the boy. He reached Dimapur on March 23.
