Congress MLA Yamakam had a narrow escape on Monday evening after he was saved by some people, from an  attempt  made on his life by a cadre of the NSCN-IM, at his Shamatore residence.

Source said that one Lieutenant of NSCN-IM identified as Athong Yimchunger of Junger Village along with an accomplice entered Yamakam’s residence at around 5:00 pm on Monday and started demanding money from the latter. The MLA agreed to pay Rs 5000, but the duo instead of accepting the money began to press for more. When the MLA expressed his inability to meet their demand, Athong took out a pistol, cocked it and was about to shoot at him. However, some people who were close by overpowered the two culprits and saved the MLA from the cadres, source said.

Source also said that the elders of Shamatore town had a public meeting today with regard to the incident and has given a 10 days deadline to the NSCN-IM authority to hand over the two culprits to the public. The meeting resolved that in case the NSCN-IM authority failed to meet their demand, the public will decide on a further course of action against the NSCN-IM, source added.
Meanwhile, the Congress Legislators party leader I Imkong, while condemning the incident has demanded that the law enforcing agency bring the culprit to book. It also asked the state government to review the security of the legislators and provide adequate security cover to them.

In a separate press note, the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) expressed its shock over the life attempt on Yamakam. The Congress party urged upon the State Government to ensure security and protection to its citizens instead of letting anti-social elements take upper hand to run the affairs of the State. “The bid on the life of the senior Congress leader is another glaring instance where State Government has to gear up its machinery in tackling the law and order situation. The Congress party further appeals to the State Government to book the culprit and take appropriate action without delay”, NPCC general secretary Medokul Sophie stated.
