Mokokchung, October 1 (MExN): In view of the ongoing intensive enforcement of the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act, 1989, the Mokokchung Police has cautioned house owners, landlords and owners of commercial premises against knowingly allowing their premises to be used for the illegal sale, storage, distribution or other activities involving liquor.
In a public notice dated September 30, Senior Superintendent of Police (SP), Mokokchung, Vesuprа Kezo, NPS, stated that under the provisions of the NLTP Act, an owner or occupier who knowingly permits his or her premises to be used for the commission of an offence under the Act may also be liable for legal action.
The notice advised house owners and landlords to exercise due vigilance over the use of their rented premises. It further urged them to immediately inform the nearest police station, Excise authority, ward authority or village council upon receiving credible information that a tenant or occupant is engaged in the illegal sale or storage of liquor.
Where an investigation establishes that a house owner, landlord, tenant or occupant knowingly permitted, facilitated or abetted the use of any premises for the illegal sale, storage or distribution of liquor, appropriate legal action will be initiated under the relevant provisions of the NLTP Act, the notice stated.
The Mokokchung Police also cautioned that where any person knowingly manufactures, stores, supplies, sells, distributes, facilitates or permits the sale of adulterated or spurious liquor which causes serious injury or death, a separate criminal case will be registered and investigated under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and other applicable laws.
Any owner, landlord, tenant, seller, supplier or other person found to have knowingly participated in or facilitated such activity will be proceeded against in accordance with law, subject to the evidence collected during investigation, it stated.
The police also requested all ward unions, village councils and civil society organisations to disseminate the notice and extend cooperation towards strict implementation of the prohibition, with the stated objective of preventing further loss of life in the district.
